WHAT IS A DUAL LANGUAGE PROGRAM?

Silvermine Dual Language Magnet School is a K-5 dual language immersion program that utilizes a 50-50 model of instruction.

• Half of the instructional minutes are conducted in English and half of the instructional minutes are conducted in Spanish.
• Within each classroom, approximately half of the students speak Spanish and half of the students speak English. It is important to note that some students are already bilingual when they begin their schooling, and other students come from homes that speak a language other than Spanish or English.
• Silvermine uses a team-teaching model. Each student has a team of two teachers: one English teacher and one Spanish teacher. They begin their day in one language and then switch classrooms at midday to learn for the remaining day in the other language.
• Math is taught in either English or Spanish for the duration of the year, and the language of instruction alternates by year.
• Reading and Writing are taught every day in both English and Spanish beginning in Kindergarten.
• Science and Social Studies are integrated with language arts to provide context and an authentic learning experience for all students. The language of instruction is maintained for the duration of the year and alternates by year.
• The Curriculum at Silvermine is driven by the Common Core Standards in English and Spanish and follows the same scope and sequence as all other schools in the Norwalk District, but in two languages rather than one.

WHO IS THE PROGRAM FOR?

The program is designed to benefit most students and is offered through a lottery to any student living in the Norwalk District who chooses to apply. Priority is given to families residing in the Silvermine neighborhood district and siblings of students currently in the program. Remaining spots are given to students through a lottery. Busing is provided.

¿QUÉ ES UN PROGRAMA DE LENGUAJE DUAL?

La Escuela Silvermine Especializada en Lenguaje Dual es un programa de K-5 de doble inmersión que utiliza el modelo 50-50 de instrucción.

• La mitad de los minutos de instrucción son conducidos en inglés y la otra mitad de los minutos de instrucción se conducen en español.
• Dentro de cada salón, aproximadamente, la mitad de los estudiantes habla español y la otra mitad habla inglés. Es muy importante notar que algunos estudiantes ya son bilingües cuando comienzan la escolaridad, y otros estudiantes vienen de hogares dónde se habla otro idioma distinto al español o inglés.
• Silvermine emplea un modelo de enseñanza en equipo. Cada estudiante tiene un equipo de dos profesores: un profesor de inglés y un profesor de español. Comienzan su día en un idioma y luego cambian de salón a medio día para aprender el resto del día en el otro idioma.
• Las Matemáticas se enseñan en español o inglés durante todo el año y el lenguaje de instrucción cambia por año.
• La lectura y escritura se enseñan diariamente en ambos español e inglés desde kínder.
• Ciencias Naturales y Ciencias Sociales están integradas con las artes del lenguaje para brindar contexto y una experiencia de aprendizaje única para todos los estudiantes. El mismo lenguaje de instrucción se mantiene durante todo el año y cambia por año.
• El currículo en Silvermine está determinado por los Estándares Comunes de Educación en inglés y en español, y cumple con el mismo orden y comprensión de las otras escuelas en el distrito de Norwalk, pero en dos idiomas.

¿PARA QUIÉN ES EL PROGRAMA?

El programa está diseñado para beneficiar a la mayoría de los estudiantes y es ofrecido a través de una lotería para cualquier estudiante que desee aplicar y resida en el distrito de Norwalk. La prioridad se reserva para las familias que residen en la zona de Silvermine y para los hermanos de los estudiantes que actualmente se encuentran en el programa. El resto de los lugares vacantes se otorgan a los estudiantes a través de una lotería.
